I go over there and every Christmas, he stands out on his porch with about a gallon of bourbon and drinks to passers-by. John Sandford: (laughing) Doug lives about six or eight blocks from me. Question: You travel a lot. Archeology is also one of your passions. You were part of an archaeological expedition in Israel. My interview with Doug Preston last year provided some real insight into the field. John Sandford: I’ve got a piano but I don’t play it really. And I’ve got, I think, 13 guitars although I’m a terrible guitarist. But it’s all part of liking music I’ve always shrouded my books with music. Davenport has a list someplace of his 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era (Broken Prey, 2001). It doesn’t include any Beatles’ songs. Photography. Art (Sandford is a skilled painter.) Land Surveying. And you used to take piano lessons.
Question: Music is just one of your many enthusiasms. Along with hunting, fishing, canoeing. John Sandford: I’ve always liked that kind of bluesy roots music. And they’re pretty good. Question: I always enjoy the musical references in your books. How did you discover Larkin Poe? (Named after their great-great-great grandfather, they’ve been called ‘little sisters of the Allman Brothers.’) I think it’s one of the coolest places in the country. The weirdest thing about New Jersey, from my point of view, is the southern part. The Pine Barrens are pretty interesting but there are other parts about half-way south that still look like when George Washington was marching around there. And then you get ‘way down south almost to the rim and it’s almost like the Deep South - a completely different state. It’s really neat, a great part of New Jersey. John Sandford: I live in New Mexico now but I lived in Minnesota for 30 years. I’ve been by (the museum) but not in. It’s sort of locally famous and it’s weird, that’s why I dropped it in there. There’s a guy somewhere (Cawker City, Kansas) that had this enormous ball of string, 12 feet in diameter or something and if you wander around anywhere in the Midwest, and probably up in New England, there’s gonna be weird stuff, all sorts of odd tourist attractions. Question: Your books always teach me something new. I had no idea there was a Spam Museum in Austin, Minnesota. Have you ever visited it? some of them don’t work out quite as well as you wish. Others seem to have a life of their own that work out very well. John Sandford: You do have a sense that sometimes you’re getting into a little bit of trouble. Look at books in a long series, there isn’t any question that some are better than others. They’re kind of like children. Question: You have said that you know while you’re writing a book whether it’s going to be a good one.

John Sandford: Well, the thing about writing a novel is that it comes in little pieces. My writing experience is going back and forth, continually changing lines, dialog, so forth. Question: Some parts of Holy Ghost are laugh-out-loud funny. I love the character Virgil Flowers. Do you have as much fun writing him as the books are to read? Virgil Flowers, once a sidekick of Davenport’s, was spun off into his own series in "Dark of the Moon." "Holy Ghost," the 11th in the Flowers series, debuted last month. "Twisted Prey," which was released in April of this year, is the 29th book in the Davenport series. Sandford, whose given name is John Roswell Camp and is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, has said that Davenport shares a lot of his own characteristics: “It’s just easier to remember that way.” John Sandford published his first novel, "Rules of Prey," in 1989 and in it, introduced his popular character Lucas Davenport.
